What drives the rate

Kazakhstani tenge. The tenge has floated freely since August 2015, when it lost more than a quarter of its value in a day. It moves with oil prices, the ruble and FX sales from the National Fund.

Russian ruble. Since the June 2024 sanctions the dollar no longer trades on the Moscow Exchange, so the central bank sets its official rate from over-the-counter bank trades. The ruble moves mainly on the key rate, export revenue and oil prices.

This is the interbank market rate. The Bank of Russia sets its official rate once a day from the previous day's trades, so it can differ slightly; banks and exchange offices add their own margin.
