Ethereum is a smart contract blockchain launched in 2015. Vitalik Buterin proposed the idea, and the network was built with co-founders including Gavin Wood and Joseph Lubin. It hosts decentralized exchanges, lending protocols, stablecoins, NFTs and thousands of other applications.
Ether (ETH) pays for transactions and computation on the network. Since 2022 Ethereum has run on proof-of-stake, with validators securing the chain by staking ETH. Part of every fee is burned, so supply can shrink when activity is high. Scaling happens mostly on layer-2 networks such as Arbitrum, Base and Optimism.
