Bitcoin Halving: Next Halving Countdown and Full History
A halving cuts the miners' block reward in half. It happens every 210,000 blocks, roughly every four years. The next, fifth halving is at block 1,050,000: 79,988 blocks to go, with an estimated date of April 10, 2028. The reward will drop from 3.125 to 1.5625 BTC.
Time to the next halving
The date is estimated from the average block time over the current difficulty period; blocks do not arrive exactly every 10 minutes, so the date drifts by days.

Log scale, weekly closes since 2013. Orange marks show past halvings; the dashed line is the expected fifth halving at the current block pace. The first halving (November 2012) predates the daily data, so it is not on the chart.

What a halving is and why it exists
New bitcoins only appear as a reward to the miner who finds a block. A rule written into the code halves that reward every 210,000 blocks. In 2009 a block paid 50 BTC; after four halvings it pays 3.125 BTC. That is why the total supply can never exceed 21 million, and the last bitcoin will be mined around 2140.
After a halving miners receive half as many new coins, so new supply grows more slowly. Historically every halving was followed by a rally and a new price record within 12–18 months, but other forces move the price too — Fed rates, ETF flows, market liquidity. Past cycles do not guarantee future ones.
Frequently asked questions
When is the next bitcoin halving?
At block 1,050,000, estimated for April 10, 2028. The exact date depends on how fast blocks are found.
What is a halving in simple terms?
A scheduled cut in half of the reward miners get for a new block. It happens every 210,000 blocks, about every four years.
How many halvings have there been?
Four: in 2012, 2016, 2020 and 2024. The fifth is expected in 2028.
How does a halving affect the bitcoin price?
It slows the issuance of new coins. After past halvings the price rose and set a new high within a year or so, but that is an observation, not a law: the market also depends on macro conditions.
How many bitcoins have been mined?
About 20,093,788 of 21 million, based on the current block height.
