Chainlink is a decentralized oracle network that delivers outside data to smart contracts: asset prices, FX rates, event outcomes. It was launched in 2017 by Sergey Nazarov and Steve Ellis. Without oracles, DeFi lending and derivatives protocols could not read market prices.
Chainlink price feeds are used by most major DeFi protocols. The network also runs CCIP, a cross-chain messaging protocol, and works with banks and financial firms on tokenized assets. LINK pays node operators and is staked to secure the network.
