The Altcoin Season Index shows who is leading right now: bitcoin or the rest of the market. We take the 100 largest coins by market cap and count what share of them gained more than bitcoin over the last 90 days. 75 and above is altcoin season, 25 and below is bitcoin season, anything in between is a market without a clear leader.
Methodology
Every day we take the 100 largest coins by market cap, excluding bitcoin. Stablecoins, tokenized gold and stocks, wrapped and staking tokens are left out: they are not standalone altcoins but another asset in a wrapper. For each coin we compare its 90-day price change with bitcoin's. The index is the share that beat bitcoin, from 0 to 100.
The history is built from daily CoinMarketCap snapshots at 00:00 UTC; the current value is recalculated every 15 minutes. CoinMarketCap also uses 100 coins; CoinGlass and Blockchaincenter use 50, so their readings are usually a little higher.
