How much of THEIR MONEY is long. Here size matters, not the number of accounts. Many accounts long but little money long means they hold their longs in small size.

Who counts as a top trader. The venue takes the upper slice of its clients by margin balance — usually the top twenty percent — and publishes two numbers. First: how many of those accounts are long, where each account counts once whether it holds a dollar or a million. Second: how much of their money is long, where an account weighs as much as its position.

Why it is worth watching. Big accounts tend to be more experienced and more disciplined than the crowd, and they usually turn earlier. So the interesting part is not the number itself but the gap: when the money of top traders moves one way while the whole market sits the other.

⚠️ What it does not mean. Some large positions are not a bet on direction but a hedge or an arbitrage: a fund holds the coin and shorts the perpetual. That short lands in the statistics like any other, so a bearish tilt may simply be hedging.

⚠️ Each venue picks its own cut-off for a top account, so figures from different venues are not comparable with each other — compare the lines within one venue.

Frequently asked questions

Who counts as a top trader?

Each exchange takes the upper slice of its clients by margin balance, usually the top twenty percent, and publishes how they are positioned.

Why are there two numbers for top traders?

One counts accounts: how many top traders are long. The other weighs by money: how much of their capital is long. Many accounts long with little money long means small, cautious longs.

How should I use the top trader ratio?

Compare it with the whole market. When top traders lean the opposite way from the crowd, it is worth attention, because large accounts tend to turn earlier.
