In September, the US unemployment rate was 4.2%, compared to a forecast of 4.1% and the previous reading of 4.1%. Nonfarm payroll employment increased by 29K, below the forecast of 89K and the previous figure of 133K.
Average hourly earnings rose by 3.0% year-over-year (forecast 3.2%, previous 3.1%) and by 0.1% month-over-month (forecast 0.3%, previous 0.3%). Employment and wage growth in September were below expectations across all key indicators.
