Unstoppable Domains has pulled the plug on its plans to integrate nine of its Web3 domains into the traditional DNS system. The company cited ICANN's requirements and the hefty participation costs as the main reasons. These domains will continue to live exclusively on-chain for now, without native support from standard internet infrastructure.

Which domains are affected

The domains impacted by this decision include: .crypto, .bitcoin, .wallet, .polygon, .nft, .dao, .unstoppable, .zil, and .blockchain.

Why the plans were dropped

According to the company, the main factors were ICANN's strict requirements and the significant costs involved. Just submitting applications would have cost at least $2 million.

What this means right now

All of the above zones will remain strictly on-chain domains. They won't become regular top-level DNS domains and won't get native support from standard internet tools.

ICANN context

ICANN recently reopened applications for new top-level domains for the first time in years, but Unstoppable Domains is sitting this one out.
