On August 27, 2026, Epic Games rolled out a major update for City Sample—the free demo project featuring the massive city from The Matrix Awakens tech demo. The big news: you no longer need external tools to build the city. Now, everything is generated procedurally right inside Unreal Engine 5.8 using its new framework. On top of that, you can create and tweak the environment using a language model through the built-in MCP server in the editor.
What's New in City Sample
The project now uses native procedural generation directly within UE 5.8. That means no more relying on outside tools for scene assembly—you can build the city straight in the editor. This approach covers both creating and editing the city layout, all within the engine itself.
Language Model Editing via MCP Server
The update adds the ability to hand off city building and editing tasks to a language model. The integration works through the editor's built-in MCP server, letting you manage content with an LLM—from layout to tweaks—without ever leaving UE.
Why Devs Should Care
Procedural generation inside the engine, plus LLM-powered editing, streamlines the workflow and speeds up content experiments. Teams can quickly set up huge scenes and test ideas right in the editor, without jumping between different tools.
