South Korea is bringing back alternative military service for AI specialists. Starting in 2027, AI researchers will be able to fulfill a three-year service requirement by working in the labs of major companies, including Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics.

How the Quota Works

The program has 240 spots up for grabs, with half of those reserved for corporate R&D centers. That means some AI pros can do their service in industrial labs instead of traditional military roles.

Big Business Intake Returns

This is the first time since 2013 that large companies can take part in the program. So far, nine labs have already applied for 81 out of the 120 available corporate spots.

Service Term

Anyone joining the program will serve for three years in these alternative roles.
