PeckShield and CertiK reported that in September 2026, losses from hacks and exploits in the crypto industry exceeded $766 million, making it the worst month of the year. According to PeckShield, there were 55 major incidents totaling $766.5 million, while CertiK recorded 97 incidents with losses of $768.4 million.
Major incidents: Bitget at $388M and Liquid Network at $320M
The largest share of losses came from the Bitget hack at $388 million and the Liquid Network exploit at $320 million. More than $270 million was later recovered from the latter incident.
Monthly statistics: 55–97 incidents and growth from August
Both companies reported a sharp increase in losses compared to August. The difference in figures is due to different methodologies: PeckShield highlighted 55 major cases, while CertiK counted a total of 97 incidents.
Other attacks and losses since the start of the year
Other September cases included Safe Wallet ($7.8 million), DCENT ($6 million), and Duelbits ($5.9 million). According to CertiK's security panel, there have been 656 incidents in 2026 with total losses of $2.68 billion.
