The Ministry of Digital Development, in its updated strategy draft, described the wear of trunk fiber optic lines as critical and warned of potential internet disruptions. By 2030, more than 400,000 km of cable will need to be replaced, with an average cost of about 1 million rubles per kilometer, totaling around 400 billion rubles. Over 50% of these lines have already exceeded their guaranteed service life of 25 years.
Traffic increased tenfold in a decade to 218.8 exabytes
Over the past 10 years, internet traffic in Russia has grown about tenfold, reaching 218.8 exabytes. On aging lines, the increasing load may degrade signal transmission.
Lack of backup routes increases risk of disruptions
Accidents on trunk segments without backup routes can lead to communication outages.
