Petrobras has developed two blockchain applications on Cardano to track sustainability data for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable Diesel R as part of ongoing R&D collaboration. The volumes of fuel and timelines for large-scale implementation have not been disclosed.
CS-SAF tokens prevent double counting of environmental claims
The first application, created in partnership with Ledger Labs at PUC-Rio, tokenizes the environmental attributes of SAF into digital CS-SAF tokens. The Book-and-Claim model allows the environmental benefit to be separated from the physical fuel and assigned to an airline, company, or passenger, even if the SAF is used elsewhere, while tokenization prevents reuse of the same claim. CS-SAF metadata is aligned with CORSIA; passengers can receive such tokens through the app and certificates linked to their trip and the corresponding environmental claim.
Digital checkpoints for Diesel R and Scope 3 reporting support
The second application creates digital checkpoints to track the production, transportation, and use of Diesel R. According to the Cardano Foundation, the collected data may support Scope 3 reporting, covering indirect emissions across the company's value chain.
Projects part of R&D collaboration with PUC-Rio since 2023
Both solutions are implemented as part of an R&D partnership launched in 2023, which began with blockchain education programs for Petrobras employees and will expand in 2025 to include energy sector research in collaboration with Ledger Labs PUC-Rio.
Blockchain already used for SAF: Shell example
Since 2022, Shell has used the Avelia blockchain platform with the Book-and-Claim model to track SAF environmental attributes and prevent double counting. In a September update, the company reported that since launch, Avelia has helped add over 84 million gallons of SAF to the global network, resulting in more than 780,000 tons of CO₂e emissions reductions as of June 2026. In January, Australia's Viva Energy also signed an agreement with NoviqTech to explore digital Book-and-Claim systems for SAF, including the use of blockchain for emissions reporting and tracking environmental claims.
