JD.com is making a massive move to automate its logistics network. Over the next five years, the company plans to purchase 3 million robots, 1 million self-driving vehicles, and 100,000 drones. The initiative was introduced by JD.com's logistics arm at an event in Beijing, and includes plans to retrain employees to work alongside the new tech.
The Scale of the Plan
This multi-million device rollout will cover every major link in JD.com's supply chain—from warehouses to last-mile delivery. Robots, autonomous vehicles, and drones will take on repetitive and labor-intensive tasks, all aimed at boosting the speed and resilience of JD.com's logistics operations.
Wolf Robot and Its Role
During the presentation, JD.com unveiled its industrial Wolf Robot lineup. These bots are built for repetitive jobs like picking, sorting, and moving goods. The solutions are designed to plug directly into logistics workflows, taking over tasks that are currently handled by humans.
People and the Transition
JD.com is set to retrain its workforce to collaborate with the new robotics. The plan is for robots to replace couriers and warehouse workers for certain tasks, while employees shift focus to roles that require oversight and management of these automated systems.
