Japan is working on a real-time settlement system powered by blockchain for stock and government bond transactions. The goal: instant trades, moving away from traditional systems to a distributed ledger infrastructure.
What Japan's regulators are planning
The project roadmap is set to be ready by early 2027. The plan is to build the tech backbone that would let stock and government bond settlements happen instantly. If regulators give the green light, the system could go live in the early 2030s.
Who’s involved and what’s next
The FSA, Ministry of Finance, Bank of Japan, and major financial players are all joining the initiative. This summer, they're putting together a working group to hash out the blockchain architecture, assign responsibilities, and lay out the next steps for development.
Timeline and what's ahead
First up, the group will map out the technical framework and how everyone will interact. By early 2027, the full project plan should be on the table. If the project gets final approval, rollout of the blockchain infrastructure could kick off in the early 2030s.
