This September, India is rolling out a pilot program to issue tokenized corporate bonds using its wholesale central bank digital currency (CBDC). According to Cointelegraph, the first placement will be led by state-owned REC, with all settlements between participants handled in digital rupees issued by the central bank.

Pilot for Tokenized Bonds

The pilot is designed to launch debt instruments as tokens on a blockchain. Only select investors will be able to buy and sell these bonds, transacting exclusively in the wholesale digital rupee. The idea is to boost transparency and streamline settlements for everyone involved in the market.

Role of REC and Market Participants

REC, a government-backed company that finances energy projects, will be the first to issue tokenized bonds in this test run. A group of chosen investors will get access to these new instruments through a digital platform set up for the pilot.

Goals and Outlook

The pilot aims to explore how tokenizing debt instruments with CBDC can work in practice. The hope is that this project will show how effective these new technologies could be for India’s financial sector and help map out the next steps for digital financial products.
