Germany just fired up JION—a new quantum computer built on ion trap tech, thanks to the Jülich Research Center and startup eleQtron. The system is now being plugged into the center's broader computing ecosystem.
Hardware and Tech
JION’s qubits are made from ionized ytterbium atoms. Unlike some other quantum rigs, this processor doesn’t need to be cooled to near absolute zero.
Integration and Access
JION is being hooked up to the center’s supercomputers via the JUNIQ infrastructure, letting researchers and companies tap into hybrid quantum-classical workflows. Target use cases include logistics, chemistry, medicine, materials science, and machine learning.
Project Funding
The project pulled in about €21 million in funding.
