Russia is gearing up for a fresh crackdown on crypto mining. The Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) has drafted a bill that would ban power producers and other energy sector players from acting as operators of mining infrastructure. The proposal is set to go up for public discussion soon.
What's in the FAS Proposal?
The new bill would put a hard stop on energy companies managing or operating mining infrastructure. The ban targets both electricity generators and any other players in the power sector, making it illegal for them to run or operate mining facilities.
Data Center Load
Right now, Russian data centers—including those used for mining—are pulling about 4 GW of power. By 2030, that figure could jump by another 2 GW.
What's Next?
The FAS said the bill will be up for public comment soon. The key point: energy producers and other power sector players would be banned from operating mining infrastructure.
