Europol has identified StarkWare technologies—Account Abstraction and ZK-STARK—as one way to reduce the risk of crypto wallet breaches by quantum computers.

In a Europol report, the agency notes that powerful quantum computers could derive private keys from public ones, enabling attackers to steal cryptocurrency. Bitcoin and Ethereum have not yet adopted post-quantum cryptography, and a widespread upgrade of wallets and protocols could take years. The report states that the risk to blockchain integrity is lower than the risk to wallets, as blockchains are protected by more resilient hash functions. The agency urges the industry to begin transitioning to post-quantum security now.

Europol Highlights Wallet Protection as a Priority

The report concludes that the primary risk vector is the potential for quantum systems to reconstruct private keys, making user wallets especially vulnerable. Updating cryptographic schemes and infrastructure will require significant time and coordination.

StarkWare Plans Post-Quantum Transition for Starknet by 2027

StarkWare acknowledged the mention of its technologies and reiterated its intention to complete Starknet's transition to post-quantum security by 2027.
