Ethereum developers have scheduled the activation of the Glamsterdam upgrade on the Sepolia testnet for October 6.
Sepolia node operators must update clients before activation
The Ethereum Foundation announced that Sepolia node operators need to update both their execution and consensus clients in advance.
Built-in PBS will reduce reliance on external software
One of the main changes is the introduction of protocol-level proposer-builder separation (PBS). The delivery of ready blocks from specialized builders to validators will occur at the protocol level, reducing dependence on external middleware.
Block-level access lists and new gas pricing
Glamsterdam introduces block-level access lists, which record the accounts and storage areas used in each block. Gas pricing will also change to better reflect the cost of creating and accessing data on Ethereum. Contracts relying on fixed gas stipends or hardcoded gas limits may require adjustments.
Dates for Hoodi and mainnet not set; Hegotá is next
Developers have not yet announced deployment dates for Glamsterdam on the validator-focused Hoodi testnet or on mainnet. The next upgrade after Glamsterdam is Hegotá, which developers are targeting for 2027. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin stated that Hegotá could be the last "regular" fork before the transition to recursive STARKs, automated formal verification, optimized consensus, and quantum-resistant cryptography.
