The European Central Bank (ECB) kicked off its application process on September 15, inviting e-commerce and m-commerce companies operating in the eurozone to join the digital euro pilot. Selected merchants will get the chance to accept a test version of the CBDC in their online stores and mobile apps.
What the ECB Is Offering
Participants will get access to a sandbox environment that’s technically and functionally similar to the digital euro described in the draft legislation. This test version isn’t legal tender, though—it's just for trial runs.
How the Testing Works
Companies can try out integrating the digital euro into their current checkout and payment flows, from placing an order to completing a transaction online. After testing, participants will send their feedback and suggestions on the system back to the ECB.
Participation Terms
Joining the pilot is voluntary and unpaid. The ECB is looking for merchants based in the eurozone who are active in e-commerce or m-commerce. Selected companies will get tools to accept test payments and communicate directly with the regulator.
