On a recent podcast, David Sacks called out Vitalik Buterin for allegedly bankrolling anti-AI campaigns. According to Sacks, Buterin and several other billionaires have supported organizations that stoke AI fears and oppose building new data centers.
Memecoin Transfers and the Future of Life Institute
Sacks pointed out that Buterin had sent a batch of memecoins he received via airdrop to the Future of Life Institute. Sacks said that this package eventually hit a value of around $600 million. He claims these funds were partly used to support media, research, and groups that push negative narratives about AI.
AI Regulation and Model Architecture
Sacks argued that the US is currently leading the global AI race, warning against heavy-handed regulation or the creation of a dedicated AI regulator that could slow down model approvals. In his view, the real battleground is shifting to open and decentralized models vs. closed and centralized ones—if things go the wrong way, a handful of major AI firms could end up dominating the market.
Incidents, AI Security, and the Market
Addressing the story of "rogue" AI agents and the Hugging Face hack, Sacks said the incident was overblown: the agents just did their job and used API keys that developers had left exposed in public repos. For Sacks, the answer to these risks isn’t more restrictions, but better AI cybersecurity. He compared the current AI boom to 1998 before the dot-com bust: there’s a lot of hype, but he thinks the peak is still ahead. Unlike back then, today’s leading AI companies actually have real products and serious revenue.
Politics and Innovation
Sacks called Donald Trump "the best friend innovators have in Washington." He said Trump is laser-focused on keeping the US at the cutting edge of tech, opposes overregulation, and doesn’t buy into AI doomerism.
