Developer and investor David Kalmanson pulled off a wild feat: using Codex AI, he rebuilt the classic RTS Red Alert 2: Yuri’s Revenge from scratch for native iOS and macOS play—all in just 26 days. He didn’t have access to the original source code, since it was never released and is considered lost. Instead, Codex worked directly with the EXE file from the Windows version.
What happened
Kalmanson leveraged Codex to reverse-engineer the game so it runs natively on modern Apple devices. The AI agent dug into the Windows executable and helped bring full compatibility to iOS and macOS, sidestepping the need for any original source files.
How was this even possible?
With no source code available, the only thing to work with was the EXE. Codex managed to analyze and reconstruct enough from that file to get Red Alert 2: Yuri’s Revenge up and running natively on Apple platforms.
Why this matters
This project shows just how powerful AI agents can be for reviving and preserving classic games—even when the source code is long gone. It opens up new ways to bring legendary titles back to life on modern hardware without emulation, which is a big deal for both devs and die-hard fans.
No details yet on how to get the builds, licensing, or what’s next for the project.
