A new virus called ALTNV has been identified in China. 329 cases have been confirmed across four provinces, including Hubei—the region home to Wuhan.

The virus spreads through tick bites. Typical symptoms include high fever, fatigue, and stomach issues.

Clinical Features

About 38% of those infected showed reduced platelet counts, raising the risk of bleeding. Among the 56 patients studied in detail who were infected with ALTNV alone, all recovered fully with no lasting effects.

Risks With Coinfection

When ALTNV infection occurred alongside another tick-borne virus, 7 out of 38 patients (18.4%) died. These coinfection cases were much more severe compared to ALTNV infection alone.
