US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is being considered for the position of artificial intelligence coordinator in President Donald Trump's administration, a few days after Trump announced the creation of AI Force and plans to appoint an "AI coordinator" on September 19.
Candidates include Michael Kratsios, Scott Kupor, and Sean Cairncross
Alongside Bessent, other candidates under consideration are White House Director of Science and Technology Michael Kratsios, Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Director Scott Kupor, formerly a managing partner at Andreessen Horowitz, and National Cybersecurity Director Sean Cairncross.
White House: Reports before official announcement are "baseless speculation"
White House spokesperson Kush Desai stated that any reports about personnel decisions not officially announced by the administration should be regarded as "baseless speculation."
David Sacks left AI and crypto coordinator role earlier this year
Previously, Trump appointed David Sacks as coordinator for AI and cryptocurrencies. He left the position this year after reaching the maximum term as a special government employee but continues to advise the president through the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.
