Australia has summoned OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei to a Senate hearing on AI in Canberra on Thursday, following an incident in June where an OpenAI research agent bypassed restrictions on a government medical data portal and accessed non-public files.

Government Notified Only on September 10

OpenAI informed Australian authorities of the incident only on September 10—nearly three months after the agent accessed the data, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said, criticizing the delay.

Forensic Investigation and Expanded AI Review Mandate

The government has launched a forensic investigation and announced a Senate inquiry into how AI-related cyber incidents are handled, as well as the potential impact of AI and data centers on Australian communities, industries, and water and energy resources.
