Zcash is a privacy-focused cryptocurrency launched in 2016, built on research by academic cryptographers. Like bitcoin, supply is capped at 21 million coins and new blocks are mined.
Its defining feature is shielded transactions using zero-knowledge proofs (zk-SNARKs): the network verifies that a transfer is valid without revealing the sender, receiver or amount. Users choose whether a transaction is transparent or private. The protocol is developed by the Electric Coin Company and the Zcash Foundation.
