Dogecoin was created in 2013 by programmers Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer as a joke about altcoin mania, with the Shiba Inu dog meme as its mascot. It has since become one of the most recognizable cryptocurrencies.
Technically, Dogecoin is based on Litecoin's code and uses Scrypt proof-of-work with one-minute blocks. Unlike bitcoin, supply is not capped: a fixed number of new coins is added every year. Much of DOGE's popularity comes from its community and public support from Elon Musk.
